EW Airborne “Suite” Defense Meets Drone Warfare
From the Paris Airshow to global skies, Elbit Systems charts a new narrative in aerial defense against the drone menace
In recent years, it feels like drones have become as common as smartphones, popping up in nearly every electronics store. Their rise has brought incredible opportunities, from capturing breathtaking aerial shots to exploring new perspectives in recreational flying.
However, while they are exciting and innovative, their often-unmonitored presence is a genuine concern for larger aircraft up in the sky, such as military and commercial planes.
And it’s not just about them being hard to spot. These UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) can pose real navigation threats. Even more concerning is the potential for misuse: imagine malicious groups using these affordable gadgets not for awe-inspiring photos, but as explosive-laden threats.
It quickly became clear that these emerging challenges required immediate attention.
Introducing “The Suite”
Elbit Systems’ ISTAR & EW division stands out as a global leader in this specialized arena. With the growing challenges posed by drones, they’ve shifted their focus to tackle this head-on. Their latest innovations were on full display at the Paris Airshow just a few weeks ago.
Asher, a Senior R&D Officer at Elbit Systems’ ISTAR & EW division, clarifies, “This particular feature is an integral part of our digital RWR (Radar Warning Receivers). It’s noteworthy to mention that this system is already operational, safeguarding numerous aircraft globally. We’ve coined the term ‘suite’ for these combined EW capabilities, as part of Unified EW Self-Protection Suite, essentially providing aircraft with a comprehensive defense: protection against missiles, lasers, and radars.”
At its core, merging the distinct features of each detection and alert system in the suite creates a powerhouse defense against various aerial challenges, drones included. “Our ALL-in-SMALL™ offering is what sets us apart on the global arena,” Asher points out. Delving deeper, the seasoned engineer shares that they’ve managed to pack diverse aspects of EW technology into one sleek unit, thanks to modern digital tech that doesn’t lean too heavily on traditional RF-based (Radio Frequency) parts.
Elbit’s EW Suite, operational on hundreds of rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft, comprises of EW Controller, Digital Radar Warning Receiver, IR Missile Warning System (MWS), Laser Warning System (LWS), Counter Measure Dispenser System (CMDS), DIRCM and Electronic Counter Measures Jammer, operating individually or in concert; to provide maximum platform protection and aircrew survivability against advanced threats.
The Menace of Drones
Recent military clashes have brought drone warfare front and center. We’ve seen ISIS use them against NATO troops and, alarmingly, against civilians too. The Russian invasion of Ukraine also highlighted the significant role of drones, resulting in major losses for aircrews, ground units, and other aircraft.
Asher puts it bluntly, “It’s clear just how much damage these small platforms can do.” He adds, “In the modern sky, sending a plane out on a low-altitude mission without the right detection and defense? That’s a recipe for disaster.”
Drones don’t just present an immediate danger; they can also shift the bigger strategic picture. These crafty little flyers can quietly go about their business – dodging radars, collecting intel, and scouting the landscape.
Asher spells out the risks, “It’s clear they can wreak havoc in many ways, from hitting targets to causing actual casualties.” He goes on, “Given these challenges, there’s a growing appetite for our solution. Many products out there just don’t measure up when it comes to tackling the wide range of threats we face today.”
In a nutshell, every cool tech we get our hands on today can also be a tool for mischief if it ends up with the wrong crowd. Staying alert and always being a step ahead is crucial. Asher chimes in, “We’ve seen a surge of interest from clients across the globe, especially after our big moment at the Paris Airshow. Our goal is to keep refining our tech to stay ahead of whatever new threats pop up next.”
