Young Hero’s Sacrifice Fuels Firefighting Squadron

At a mere 16 years old, Elad Riban, a volunteer firefighter, selflessly put others before himself. Today, his spirit ignites the mission of Elbit Systems' exceptional unit, committed to averting future disasters

In 2010, tragedy struck when the Carmel Mountain wildfires raged through Israel, leaving destruction in their wake. Among the heroes who rose to the occasion was a remarkable young volunteer firefighter, Elad Riban, just 16 years old. His courageous spirit and deep sense of responsibility drove him to action, and, as former Israeli President Shimon Peres eloquently put it, “No one had ever sent him on his mission, no one had called him, it was his sheer bravery and conscience that sent him onwards.”

Tragically, Elad lost his life in the line of duty. However, his legacy endured, and months after his passing, the inquiry committee for this disaster made a decision that would forever honor his memory and impact Israel’s firefighting capabilities. They resolved to establish an Israeli aerial firefighting squadron, and in a poignant tribute, it was named ‘Elad Squadron’ to pay homage to this young hero.

Eran, a former Director of Elbit System’s Elad firefighting squadron, tells us that a plaque featuring President Peres’s eulogy quote can be found at both of the squadron’s airfields. He adds that all the squadron’s personnel are significantly affiliated with Riban’s remarkable spirit and unrelenting commitment to prevent further casualties in wildfires whenever they may occur. “You can say that our former president’s heartwarming words about Riban are signifying the squadron’s spirit and are used as its ideological compass,” Eran says.

“Elad Chose to Volunteer Instead of Playing Football”

On December 2, 2010, the devastating Carmel wildfire engulfed the region, prompting a massive mobilization of rescue forces from across the country. Meanwhile, in his hometown of Haifa, a young Elad Riban was attending school. However, his role as a dedicated volunteer at the local firefighting station called him to a different duty that day.

Without hesitation, he made a life-altering choice. Forgoing his classes, he hurried home to retrieve his firefighting uniform. With determination burning as brightly as the flames he sought to quell, he boarded a bus bound for the heart of the unfolding disaster. His mission: to assist the other courageous forces and prevent the fire from encroaching upon densely populated areas.

Unfortunately, despite Elad Riban’s courageous efforts, the fire continued to rage, its voracious flames surging like colossal walls, and within a mere two hours of his arrival, he lost his life in the blaze. His fearless actions did not go unnoticed, and he posthumously received the Medal of Valor from the Israeli firefighting forces, a poignant tribute to his selfless bravery and unwavering commitment.

“It wasn’t surprising to anyone that Riban chose to spend his free time volunteering in the local Fire Scouts branch instead of doing what any other boy his age usually does, like playing on the computer or going out with friends to play football outside,” Eran continues. “His dream was to become a fireman or a pilot one day in the future.”

“Naming our squadron after him serves as a heartfelt tribute to honor and harmonize his two remarkable and selfless aspirations. It encapsulates the essence of who he was as an individual,” he shares. “The members of the Elad squadron embody the ongoing legacy of his spirit, a testament to their unwavering dedication to our mission and the security of Israel.”

A Matter of Uncertainty

The Carmel wildfire disaster marked a watershed moment in Israel’s history. What initially appeared as an ordinary wildfire swiftly evolved into a catastrophic event within hours, claiming the lives of nearly 50 individuals and displacing thousands from their homes.

The primary failure, as outlined by experts and the publicly disclosed findings of the inquiry committee, was attributed to the element of uncertainty. Eran explains, “The fire was spreading rapidly, and there was no available technological tool capable of accurately conveying the gravity of the situation to the rescue teams.”

This, he goes on to emphasize, resulted in a relatively high number of casualties. “Individuals found themselves trapped within encroaching walls of flames with little hope of escape. If a technological device had been in place to alert the bus driver carrying Riban that the fire was closing in, it could have potentially saved many lives.”

This is where Elbit Systems enters the equation. In addition to supporting and sustaining the Elad squadron, the company’s engineers were diligently developing various technological enhancements to enhance the way rescue teams perceive and respond to wildfires. Eran elaborates, “These capabilities are integrated into our Fire Shield solution. It not only directs where firefighting efforts should be focused but can also predict which areas should be avoided entirely due to the fire’s rapid advancement.”

“Today, we possess the sensors that could have played a crucial role in saving the lives of those tragically lost in the 2010 Carmel disaster,” he emphasizes. “This forms a key component of our comprehensive strategy to manage situations with a degree of uncertainty, all with the primary goal of preserving lives.”

Lifelong Commitment to Elad’s Memory

To this day, the members of the Elad squadron maintain a close and supportive relationship with Tzvia Riban, Elad’s mother. They faithfully participate in the annual memorial ceremony at his grave and provide ongoing support for Tzvia Riban’s charitable initiatives throughout the year.

“Following Elad’s tragic passing, his mother established the Elad Riban Scholarship Fund, in collaboration with the Israeli Ministry of Education, to provide scholarships to young volunteers,” Eran details. “We also make it a point to attend the scholarship award ceremony every year.”

On the previous year’s National Memorial Day for Fallen Firefighters, the squadron’s pilots organized a special aerial demonstration that passed over Riban’s memorial stone as a tribute to his memory. “Tzvia was profoundly touched and impressed by this gesture,” Eran acknowledges. “The bond between us and her is unbreakable, and she knows it well. It fills her with pride. This commitment is for life, and we intend to uphold it indefinitely.”
