Redefining Precision
The Rattlerā¢ XR embodies Elbit Systems' response to the increasing demand for a tactical, smart, and lethal laser designator
Amidst the chaos of the battlefield, one thing remains clear: uncertainty reigns supreme. Surveying the current landscape of global military conflicts paints a picture of a cluttered arena, where GPS jamming, electronic warfare (EW) tactics, and a myriad of other disruptions complicate the mission of target engagement and acquisition.
To tackle this challenge head-on, forces require a sturdy, robust, dependable, and pinpoint-accurate tool capable of swiftly guiding a bomb to its target within a matter of seconds.
Acknowledging the pivotal role of laser designation technologies as a force multiplier on today’s battlefield, it’s evident that they’ve become an essential component in target engagement across various domains. Leveraging their technological expertise and operational know-how, the experts at Elbit Systems ISTAR & EW division have crafted an innovative laser-based target acquisition tool, facilitating the swift closure of the sensor-to-shooter loop.
These tools are crafted to retain their functionality and accuracy, even when jammers and other spectrum blocking equipment are in play. By strategically investing in advanced laser solutions, Elbit Systems aims to maintain military effectiveness in the rapidly changing realm of modern conflicts.
Until recently, laser-pointing capabilities were mainly accessible to higher strategic units like battalions or regiments. But with the introduction of the Rattlerā¢ XR, even maneuvering platoons now have the independence to utilize these capabilities without the need for external assistance.
Improved Lethality, Connectivity and Survivability
The Rattlerā¢ series stands out as an advanced suite of interconnected network-enabled laser target designators, suitable for both air-to-ground and close air support (CAS) operations, as well as ground-to-ground engagements. Representing a substantial leap forward, the Rattler-XR’s advanced design meets the demands of contemporary warfare scenarios, enabling fast and accurate calls for fire and the rapid closure of the sensor-shooter loop.
A representative from Elbit Systems ISTAR & EW division, actively involved in the project, shares insights about the Rattler-XR, the latest model in the series. “Our primary goal is to increase the lethality and effectiveness while improving the users’ survivability and enhancing connectivity with other devices on the net,” he says.
The XR model introduces essential enhancements to the Rattlerā¢ family, with a critical focus on survivability. This feature enables users to remotely operate the designator from a distance and behind cover, enhancing operational flexibility and safety.
The representative highlights that the increased lethality of the Rattlerā¢ XR is attributed to its built-in laser see spot capability and informative spillover notice feature. While using ground-based laser designators, there is a risk of the laser beam to spillover, potentially causing munitions to miss their targets. The Rattlerā¢ XR addresses this issue by alerting the user through its advanced interface whenever spillover occurs, enabling immediate adjustments for accurate beam guidance. This enhancement is further emphasized by the sophisticated and intuitive UI/UX developed by Elbit Systems.
Different, Smarter Abilities
What sets Elbit Systems’ product apart from others in the market is the incorporation of video streaming from the designator’s camera. While comparable products often use a DVO system (Direct View Optics), functioning essentially as a basic telescope without smart camera features, Elbit Systems’ designator goes a step further. It not only displays collected data on-screen but also transmits it in real-time to other components within the user’s acquisition and command network.
Another important feature of this product is its open architecture design, and its ability to connect with other systems, such as C4I and target engagement solutions. It holds the ability to fully integrate with other Elbit Systems’ products such as the AION-C sights and the Hattorix solution. “This enables us to leverage this information to guide striking elements from ground, sea, and air, effectively eliminating targets using laser-guided munitions,” adds the spokesperson from the ISTAR & EW division.
“Our customers are showing considerable interest in these products. We’ve already supplied them to several NATO forces worldwide, with proven operational success. Currently, we’re processing hundreds of new orders from various clients,” he summarizes. “Simultaneously, we remain committed to continuous improvement and development of our offerings.”
