Modernizing the Eastern Flank

As the years of peace in Europe came to an end after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Romania has become a key player in the security of the continent

Throughout the war, the international community has seen the use of modern and even commercial equipment by both sides in an attempt to find a distinct advantage.

Ukraine lies to the north of Romania, one of Europe’s largest nations. It has for years operated a mix of modern NATO-standard Western equipment as well as modified variants of cold-war era equipment.

And as the war in Ukraine continues to push countries around the globe to increase their defense spending and modernize their armed forces, Elbit Systems and its subsidiaries in Romania have been helping to expand an optimize Romania’s Armed Forces with state-of-the-art solutions.

Elbit Systems has been a key partner in Romania’s defense industries for more than three decades. The early modernization programs started in the 1990s immediately after the country’s revolution and today Elbit is involved in more than just the transfer of technology with some 850 employees and continues to expand with new factories and leading projects.

 

“Our presence in Romania has grown consistently over the past 15 years and we will soon open additional production facilities,” said Ran Kril, Executive Vice President International Marketing and Business Development at Elbit Systems. “We understand the importance of Romania as an EU and NATO country and a key partner in the security of the continent.”

In the years since Elbit Systems first recognized the opportunity for partnership and growth in Romania, it established three companies and four different facilities. The companies are spread out across the country and produce electronic component, systems and subsystems for hardware equipment, production and integration of turrets and remotely controlled weapons as well as aviation training and simulators.

 

Elbit Systems and CN ROMARM S.A, through its subsidiary S Uzina Automecanica Moreni S.A (UAM) also recently signed a cooperation agreement in the field of artillery production where a Romanian Artillery Center would be established to enhance the domestic industrial base and establish a strong foundation for sovereign artillery production in the country.

 

 

 

 

The Company’s continued growth in Romania comes as the Romanian Defense Ministry has had the largest budget in 30 years, surging with 19 billion euros with almost 4 billion euros allocated to new equipment. The three main sectors of growth continue to be military fixed

Romania as emerged as a key player in the region’s defense landscape, leveraging its in-house knowledge as well as procurement of advanced technology and partnerships with international companies like Elbit Systems.
