Like A Fist Full of Iron
The Iron Fist, an active defense system for Armored Fighting Vehicles (AFVs), is highly coveted by military forces worldwide, making it the sought-after solution that many armies around the world are seeking
“Bringing our IDF troops, allies, and other customers this remarkable solution is incredibly fulfilling, especially when we know it’s the best product available in the market,” says Rami, Senior Business Development Director of Elbit Systems’ land divisions. He’s talking about a project that’s close to his heart â the Iron Fist active defense system.
According to Rami, the Iron Fist is not just an ordinary defense system adaptable to a wide range of tanks and AFVs; it is a mission-fulfillment system. He adds, “This product goes beyond combat assistance; it increases survivability in the heat of battle and stands as a game-changing solution for a wide array of conflict scenarios.”
Analyzing Threats in Milliseconds
From its inception nearly three decades ago, the Iron Fist has integrated various detection methods, including E/O thermal cameras, and radio frequency (RF) radar scanning. The collected data is processed within the main control unit of the system to determine the most effective action to counter an impending threat.
“All of these significant yet rapid actions occur within fractions of a second,” Rami continues. “The system identifies the threat’s source type and analyzes the most efficient way to neutralize it.” He explains that these advanced processes are possible due to Elbit Systems’ expertise in developing complex decision-making algorithms.
After detecting and analyzing data from the system’s various sensors, a crucial decision arises â how best to engage and intercept the threat. In this regard, the Iron Fist offers many potential responses.
“If the system detects an RPG launch, it will automatically and autonomously launch an interceptor warhead towards it,” Rami adds. “However, its primary objective is not to activate the incoming threat’s warhead in order to prevent its jet formation and in order to minimize its residual penetration and collateral damage to the vehicle and its crew. Instead, it generates a substantial shockwave that breaks or deflagrate the incoming warhead rendering it as inert.”
A similar course of action is taken against tank rounds and especially its most vicious type, the kinetic-energy (KE) round, that launches a nearly hypervelocity long-rod penetrator made out of heavy alloys such depleted Uranium or Tungsten destined to penetrate any tank and heavy APSs. Iron Fist interceptor creates an angle of attack to the KE penetrator thus reducing dramatically its nominal penetration to an absorbable level.
Confronting Loitering Drones
As the threat of combat drones and “suicide drones” (loitering munitions) becomes increasingly prevalent on the modern battlefield, the demand for a robust defense mechanism to repel them proliferates. Fortunately, Elbit Systems’ solution possesses advanced capabilities to counter this menace.
“Since most drone attacks can be anticipated well before endangering the platform, the Iron Fist detection sensors provide early warning to the crew and whoever is connected to our battle management system (BMS),” Rami explains. Capitalizing on this advantage, the force can act by using electronic disruptors, or deploying the platform’s gun or remote controlled weapon station (RWS). But if worse comes to worst and if incoming UAS is stubborn enough, the defended platform’s Iron Fist APS will launch its countermeasure and will intercept the threat at a safe distance.
An Unattainable Benchmark
“We can confidently assert that our solution is currently the only one capable of saving troops’ lives against the full spectrum and anti-tank threats, even when they are targeted from an extremely close range,” he asserts. “It is no surprise that our product is highly sought after by defense organizations and armies worldwide, as it represents the sole operational solution to these threats for both the asymmetric and the symmetric warfare arenas.”
In conclusion, Rami states, “In the past, systems of this kind were regarded merely as an additional defensive layer for combat platforms. We have changed that paradigm. The Iron Fist is a tool that significantly enhances both the survivability of any AFV it is equipped on and its situational awareness.
