Keeping Soldiers Cool and Energized: Meet Kinetics
Modern warfare depends on high-tech equipment with high energy demands that must withstand harsh conditions. This is how a subsidiary of Elbit Systems' Land Division that is marking 40 years of operations keeps everything running smoothly.
On the battlefield, mission success can hinge on something as simple as keeping platform's systems running, preventing electronics from overheating, or shielding soldiers from extreme weather.
While lethal weapon systems and sensors usually dominate defense technology headlines, Kinetics – a small but important subsidiary of Elbit Systems’ Land Division – works behind the scenes, providing essential solutions for powering, cooling, and protecting military forces worldwide.
The company focuses on developing robust, durable, and customized solutions for energy management, HVAC, cooling and warming, and CBRN protection in armored vehicles and additional platforms.
"We see ourselves as Elbit Systems’ hub for energy and cooling solutions"," says Ronit, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at Kinetics. "For example, our HVAC systems enable modern platforms to operate in extreme conditions. Without these systems, combat soldiers often will not be able to function or perform the mission optimally and the platform could be rendered inoperable".
Powering the Battlefield
Founded in 1985 and acquired by Elbit Systems in 2009, Kinetics specializes in energy, HVAC (Heating, ventilation and air conditioning), cooling, and CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear) protection systems for tactical and armored vehicles. Unlike standard off-the-shelf solutions, Kinetics customizes its technologies to meet the mission requirements of each platform and military force.
Kinetics’ auxiliary power units (APUs) supply backup energy, keeping mission-critical electronics operational even when a vehicle’s main engine is off. At the same time, its advanced HVAC and cooling systems safeguard soldiers and sensitive electronics from extreme temperatures.
"As energy demands and environmental challenges evolve, so do the requirements for efficient power and thermal management," Ronit explains. "Our expertise enables us to develop customized, highly adaptable solutions that keep vehicles, soldiers, and systems mission-ready."
An Important Role in Recent Conflicts
Kinetics' critical role became evident during Israel’s Iron Swords War, which began following the October 7 attack, as its solutions proved essential for IDF troops on the front lines.
"Our power and air conditioning units kept soldiers safe inside their vehicles, giving them a chance to rest between engagements," Ronit explains. "Meanwhile, our maintenance teams worked tirelessly to repair and sustain damaged equipment, ensuring continuous operational readiness."
Beyond combat zones, Kinetics works closely with the IDF to deliver its systems for the Merkava Mk 4 Tank, Namer APC, 155mm Roem Gun, providing not only new systems but ongoing maintenance, upgrades, and long-term support for its systems.
In addition, Kinetics collaborates with leading companies in the global defense industry. Kinetics' unique technologies are integrated into some of the world’s most familiar military platforms, including Finland's Patria AMV, the U.S. Army’s AMPV program and more.
The Future of Battlefield Energy
As high-power electronics, laser weapons, and advanced sensor suites become more prevalent, the need for efficient energy and cooling solutions has increased. "Power management across military platforms is rapidly becoming essential," says Roni, Kinetics' CEO "Every new system, whether a laser gun, EW systems, radar, or advanced computing module—demands more energy and improved cooling. Our goal is to ensure these systems remain operational, no matter how extreme the conditions are, by managing the production, storage and consumption of the energy."
Since no one-size-fits-all solution exists, the company collaborates closely with military customers to design customized energy and cooling systems for specific battlefield needs.
A Family-Like Operation
Beyond its engineering expertise, Kinetics takes pride in its workforce—a close-knit team of engineers, technicians, and industry experts operating across facilities in Israel and its U.S. based sister company, RTL (part of Elbit Systems America).
"Kinetics’ greatest strength is its people," says Ronit. "We are a highly skilled, dedicated team focused on delivering top-tier solutions to customers worldwide."
As electronic warfare continuously affects modern combat with advanced and increased demand for power, Kinetics demonstrates that energy in the form of electricity and precision cooling are just as important as firepower.
