Exclusive: Elbit’s Self-Protection Suites Successfully Deployed in Iran Conflict

The Israeli Air Force (IAF) has, for the first time, operationally deployed advanced Self-Protection Suites developed by Elbit Systems during its recent strikes in Iran. These systems, which include cutting-edge technologies for threat detection, disruption, and missile decoying, were installed on IAF fighter jets participating in Operation “Rising Lion”, which targeted nuclear facilities and strategic sites in Tehran.

The newly integrated protection suites provided a critical additional layer of defense for Israeli aircraft operating in high-threat environments, and according to defense sources, achieved unprecedented operational success.

Back in January, Israel’s Ministry of Defense announced the development of a next-generation airborne protection system for fighter aircraft. The project, valued at approximately 300 million shekels, was led by Elbit Systems in collaboration with the Directorate of Defense Research and Development (MAFAT), the Defense Procurement Administration (MANHAR), and the Israeli Air Force.

The Self-Protection Suite was installed on F-16I “Sufa” fighter jets and includes three core systems:

  1. Electronic Warfare (EW) System – Provides advanced capabilities for jamming and neutralizing threats.

  2. Electro-Optical Missile Warning System (MWS) – Detects missile launches and provides early warning for both air-to-air and surface-to-air threats.

  3. Advanced Countermeasure Dispensing System (CMDS) – Deploys flares and chaff to deceive heat-seeking and radar-guided missiles.

These integrated systems are designed to ensure maximum survivability in complex combat scenarios, particularly in environments saturated with man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS) and radar-guided threats.

The successful deployment of these suites marks a significant technological milestone for Israel’s defense industry and reinforces Elbit Systems’ position as a global leader in airborne survivability solutions.
