The T-72 Modernization program breathes new life into this battle-proven tank platform by equipping it with advanced modernization suites. Elbit Systems’ comprehensive upgrade solutions enhance the T-72’s capabilities across multiple domains.
At the core of the modernization is the fully automated and highly reliable Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), which significantly reduces the tank’s noise and thermal signatures, enabling silent operation. The APU also generates the necessary electrical power for the tank’s systems, reducing operational costs through fuel and lubricant savings while extending the main power unit’s lifespan.
Improved communications are provided by the modern CNR-9000 VHF radio, supporting digital and analog voice as well as data transmission, with powerful encryption and anti-jamming capabilities. The ELAWS laser warning system detects and categorizes laser and infrared threats, integrating with countermeasures to protect the vehicle. The VIC-1000 digital intercom system facilitates seamless crew communications and access to tactical radio networks.
The TISAS fire control system fully integrates with the tank’s original systems, enabling day and night engagement with high first-round hit probability through advanced thermal sighting and digital ballistic calculations. The Battle Management System further enhances the tank’s networked warfare capabilities, generating a common tactical picture and automating combat planning and coordination.
Auxiliary Power Unit
The tank is equipped with the high-end fully automated and very reliable Auxiliary Power Unit – which creates a wide range of tactical advantages:
Silent mode operation – Signiļ¬cant reduction of noise and thermal signatures, enabling a silent mode operation of the tank.
Increased power supply – Generation of required power for normal operation of all internal electrical consumers.
Signiļ¬cant reduction of operational costs – Saving of fuel, lubricants and extension of main power Unitās operational life.
VHF Radio
Modern VHF radio – Reliable communications at the tactical level and operation of C4I systems is facilitated by the modern VHF radio.
Digital and analog voice and data – Supporting digital and analog voice as well as data transmission.
Powerful COMSEC and ECCM – Powerful encryption and anti-jamming capabilities facilitate operation even in densely jammed environments.
Digital Intercommunication system
Crew intercommunications and access to tactical radio networks – The digital intercommunications system provides communications between the crew members as well as access to external tactical radio networks.
Modern helmets and User friendly MMI – The system includes modern helmets and user-friendly terminal units.
Laser Warning System – LWS
Detects and categorizes all known laser and IR illuminator threats aimed at the AFVs.
Warning on laser threats: Single pulse laser range finders, laser designators, beam riders.
Main features: Short reaction time. Accurately detects, categorizes and pinpoints laser-guided threats, and integrates with a range of advanced countermeasures. High detection probability and low false-alarm rate.
FCS – Fire Control System
Full integration with original systems – Compact and fully automated TISAS Fire Control System fully integrates with the T-72 turret and the original TPDK-1 sight-rangefinder.
Thermal sighting and observation system – The system enables day and night observation, aiming and firing to extended ranges by using thermal technology.
Digital ballistic calculations – High First Round Hit probability is attained through digital ballistic calculations.
Battle Management System
Netcentric warfare support – Integration into the common information space under the netcentric paradigm is attained through equipping the tank with the modern Battle Management Systems.
Common tactical picture generation – The system builds and maintains constantly updated common tactical pictures.
Electronic combat documents, orders and reports – Fully automates combat planning and command & control procedures.
Coordination in combined arms action – Facilitates coordination in combined arms action.
Terrain analysis, LOS and route simulation – Enables route planning through terrain analysis, checking of LOS and virtual route reconnaissance.
Driver’s Night System based on thermal camera
The original night vision system based on image -intensifying technology is replaced by an advanced thermal imaging system.
Increased range – Increased range performance.
Day / night – limited visibility – Day and Night operation under limited visibility conditions.
Covertness and safety – Increased safety – the new system is passive and covert and doesn’t use an easy-to-spot illuminator.
More than 2000 modernized tanks worldwide
